Burrito Squad in Vaughan
York Region just got more exciting with newly opened Burrito Squad in Vaughan, a fully halal Mexican restaurant. It’s situated right across the street from Wonderland and only a few minutes down the road from Vaughan Mills shopping centre. Business partners and long-time friends, the owners of Burrito Squad knew they wanted to open a restaurant but, they were undecided on what to serve. They had an ambition to do something different yet simple and appealing to everyone. So, when Mexican food was suggested, they knew that’s what they wanted to do.
The first thing you notice when you walk in are walls covered in bold shades of red, orange, and green. It’s a small to medium-sized family restaurant providing seating for approximately 25 diners. Their open counter concept lets you see your order being made in front of you, on a counter lined with a rainbow of bottled Jarrito sodas, an authentic Mexican soda company founded in Mexico City, with interesting flavours like Guava, Mandarin, Strawberry and Mango. Burrito Squad takes the extra step to make their spices & marinades in-house, and they even make their own sauces from scratch.
Their menu is made up of favourites that we’re all familiar with like Tacos, Bowls, Burritos, Quesadillas, and their very own Supreme Fries. You also have the option of choosing your filling: Chicken, Crispy Chicken, Ground Beef, Beef Steak, Shrimp, Fish, and Bean & Cheese. And then they have their own house-made sauces: Habanero Sauce (very spicy), Green Chilli Sauce (mildly spicy), Chipotle BBQ (smoky with a kick), and their special Burrito Sauce (mildly savoury). With a menu this customizable, we only had one choice: to order one of each…almost. Burrito Squad in Vaughan even has fresh made Churros with caramel sauce or ice cream.
We started with the Ground Beef Tacos ($8.50), 3 soft shell tacos filled with lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, shredded marbled cheese, ground beef and topped with sour cream. The tacos had a good amount of filling, were fairly chewy, and had a mild flavour profile. We asked for Chipotle BBQ and Burrito Sauce on the side for dipping, to add a little extra flavour.
Next, we had the Supreme Fries ($5.00), a tray overflowing with fries, red onions, green onions, tomatoes, ground beef, sour cream, and shredded marbled cheese. The Supreme Fries had good balance of savoury and fresh, and they were best enjoyed while they were still hot. This dish also had a milder flavour profile, so we added a little Burrito Sauce on top to give it some extra flavour. If you order the Supreme Fries, we recommend that you request having Burrito Sauce or Chipotle BBQ added from the beginning, to blend it all together well. Overall, it was filling.
After that, we had their most popular dish, the Crispy Chicken Quesadillas ($9.50). It was 4 pieces filled with their special Crispy Chicken, green pepper, tomato, red onion, and lots of marbled cheese. They’re grilled to have that nice, crispy shell and a melted, gooey inside. Their crispy chicken is marinated overnight, seasoned with their own unique blend of spices. This was our favourite dish, with much of the flavour coming from the Crispy Chicken, pairing perfectly with the melted cheese. It was savoury with kick but, it wasn’t spicy, and would make for a hearty meal all on its own. Although it didn’t require any dip, we really liked their Burrito Sauce and Chipotle BBQ so, we used it as a dip anyway.
Finally, we tried their Beef Steak Burrito (small, $8.00). Their burritos are very customizable, allowing you choose the toppings and sauces that you like best, in a corn-flour wrap. These were burritos were really stuffed. We decided to go with beans and bean paste, marbled cheese, beef steak, green pepper, tomato, spinach, burrito sauce and chipotle BBQ sauce. The burritos were grilled before they were served, and we had to request them to cut it in half just to be able to bite into. Their burrito sauce, a secret recipe that we couldn’t figure out, really shines in this dish, and overall the burrito was very filling and wholesome.
Right when we thought we were finished, we remembered the Churros & Ice Cream ($4.99). The owners of Burrito Squad went through quite a mission to find the right churro, taste-testing and ordering from all the local shops they could find. They decided on a nearby pastry-shop who delivers fresh churros regularly, and they make one upon order. They serve the fresh, warm churros sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar and topped in caramel, in a small cup with vanilla or strawberry ice cream. And it’s an amazing combination, the perfect way to end a meal.
Overall, Burrito Squad in Vaughan is a great destination for all kinds of foodies with their colourful venue and friendly service. Their customizable menu also gives diners the choice to pick and choose whatever they like so, there’s something here for everyone.
