Iftar gift idea: Ramadan Cookies
One of my favourite parts about Ramadan is that I get to always spend more time than usual with close friends and family. There’s few things that make me happier than breaking fast with my loved ones, and I’m blessed to say I’ve already been invited to three this week alone!
My mother always told me that I should never go empty handed when going to a dinner and iftar is not an exception. Since some of these iftar dinners fall on weekdays, I was a little concerned about I should take to my dinners as I come home from work around 7:30 PM every night which gives me little time to make something before maghrib.
And then it hit me. Why not give the host something that they could make at a later date? Often, the host already has the entire dinner planned so they don’t need anything else but they might really appreciate something that could help them out at a later date. An iftar gift is the perfect way to say thank you and I care and appreciate all your hard work.
So I decided to gift my hostesses cookie mix, in a Mason jar, just to make it that much cuter.
I used an old oatmeal chocolate chip cookie mix that my friend gave to me in high school and added some chocolate.
Here’s what you need for these Ramadan Cookies:
- 1 ⅓ cup all purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¾ cup cooking oats
- ¾ cup chocolate chips (I used a mix of semi-sweet and white chocolate)
- ½ cup brown sugar, packed
- ½ cup white sugar
- 1 cup of chocolates (I went with ¾ cup M&Ms and ¼ cup Skor)
- 1 litre Mason jar
Here’s how you layer it:
- Flour + baking powder + baking soda + salt (sifted)
- Chocolate chips
- ¾ of the chocolate of choice (M&Ms)
- Brown sugar
- White Sugar
- ¼ of the remaining chocolate (Skor)
Make sure everything is packed in so that the mix doesn’t get well, mixed up. If you need to add more of anything, I totally recommend more chocolate (or more oats if you want to be healthy). You can also substitute the chocolate for raisins if you’re about that life (I’m not).
That’s it! I made some little labels that say Ramadan Kareem on the front and wrote out the following instructions on the back:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Mix the dry ingredients with 1 beaten egg, ¾ cup slightly melted butter and 1 tsp vanilla.
- Roll the dough into little balls.
- Bake for 10 minutes.
That’s it! It’s the perfect little iftar gift for your hostess if you don’t have time to make anything fresh and oh-so-cute!
