Recipe: Funnel Cake!

funnel cakeThe weather for the next few days is going to be beautiful, summer feels like it never left! To celebrate, I want to share my go-to summer dessert recipe that is always a big hit with guests… funnel cake!

Funnel Cake is known as traditional fair food. It’s similar to pancake or waffle batter but it’s deep fried and then garnished with any or all of the following: icing sugar, ice cream, whip cream and strawberries.

1 liter canola oil
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1/2 cup powdered sugar, for sprinkling

Heat canola oil in deep-fryer to 350 degrees F.

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk in eggs and milk. (Use 1/2 cup of batter for each funnel cake.) Pour 1/2 cup batter through funnel into hot oil, moving in a circular motion as you do so, to make each spiral-shaped funnel cake. Fry each spiral of batter until golden brown, about 2 or 3 minutes, remove with tongs and lay on paper toweling to absorb oil. Transfer to a plate and sprinkle powdered sugar through a sieve onto top of hot dough. Add one scoop of ice cream (your flavour choice) and top with fresh sliced strawberries. Serve funnel cake immediately.

  • We once tried to deep fry pancake batter to make funnel cakes. We were desperate college students. And also sick! This recipe looks great!

Oh no! It’s fun to be adventurous in the kitchen but I guess you need a strong stomach!

  • Not fair. I’m trying to eat healthy and then I come across this. Being the foodie I am, it goes without saying that I have to try this out, though I don’t know if I’ll be able to (with a good conscience anyways) have more than a few bites. Thanks for posting this!

  • Pancake batter + ziploc bag + hot oil = funnel cake .
