Chunky Chicken Opens First Location in Canada
After wooing new fans at Halal Food Festival back in 2013, Chunky Chicken fell off the radar for sometime as they continued their expansion in other parts of the world. But it looks like they never forgot about their fans up North.
Two years later, fast-forward to today — Chunky Chicken opens their first Canadian location in East Markham on Markham Rd. and 14th Avenue in a plaza dubbed by locals as the “Bamiyan Plaza”.
The new interior is very lively – lots of colour and very, very clean. It’s new so it’s not surprising.
I clearly have no clue about Chunky Chicken because I’m expecting Popeyes’ish type of place. As I walk up to the gleaming new counter I’m surprised to learn that fried chicken is only a third of their offering. They also offer grilled items like peri peri chicken and an even bigger surprise is their pan pizzas.
Naturally, we order a bit of everything. First up is their fried chicken burger which we order as mild. It was a good burger that did it’s job. The coating on Chunky Chicken’s fried chicken is thick but it’s not as crisp as it looks. The chicken itself was well-flavoured, but most of the taste came from the batter.
The second item was their peri peri wrap. The chicken pieces are deep-fried and then finished up on the grill so it combines the best of both worlds. The flavour is intense and this seemed to be a favourite amoungst our group. Although we tried their wrap, I’m looking forward to try the burger next time.
Perhaps the most surprising menu item for me was their pizzas. I didn’t see this coming. The cashier explained that it’s a pan style pizza and that they make their dough from scratch each morning. I have kids and they love pizza so this one was a no brainer.
Next up, good ol’ fashion fried chicken pieces. We purchased two 2-piece meals. We asked for mild but it was actually spicier than we had anticipated. Way spicier than the mild chicken burger we ordered but still manageable and tasty. The coating was very dense and thick but the actual texture was light, breaking away quite easily. I was surprised at how it wasn’t overly oily (for fried chicken).
All-in-all, this is a great option for the many Muslims living in the area and a must try if you’re passing by for a quick and satisfying bite.
Meat Source: Currently chicken is only being served, which all comes from Hand Slaughtered Sources, Madina Wholesale Poultry. ** NOTE: meat was checked (verbal assurance) at time of review and can change at anytime – please check meat sources before eating and let us know if there are any discrepancies **
