Chunky Chicken Opens First Location in Canada

Chunky Chicken Opens

After wooing new fans at Halal Food Festival back in 2013, Chunky Chicken fell off the radar for sometime as they continued their expansion in other parts of the world. But it looks like they never forgot about their fans up North.

Two years later, fast-forward to today — Chunky Chicken opens their first Canadian location in East Markham on Markham Rd. and 14th Avenue in a plaza dubbed by locals as the “Bamiyan Plaza”.

The new interior is very lively – lots of colour and very, very clean. It’s new so it’s not surprising.

I clearly have no clue about Chunky Chicken because I’m expecting Popeyes’ish type of place. As I walk up to the gleaming new counter I’m surprised to learn that fried chicken is only a third of their offering. They also offer grilled items like peri peri chicken and an even bigger surprise is their pan pizzas.

Naturally, we order a bit of everything. First up is their fried chicken burger which we order as mild. It was a good burger that did it’s job. The coating on Chunky Chicken’s fried chicken is thick but it’s not as crisp as it looks. The chicken itself was well-flavoured, but most of the taste came from the batter.

The second item was their peri peri wrap. The chicken pieces are deep-fried and then finished up on the grill so it combines the best of both worlds. The flavour is intense and this seemed to be a favourite amoungst our group. Although we tried their wrap, I’m looking forward to try the burger next time.

Perhaps the most surprising menu item for me was their pizzas. I didn’t see this coming. The cashier explained that it’s a pan style pizza and that they make their dough from scratch each morning. I have kids and they love pizza so this one was a no brainer.

Next up, good ol’ fashion fried chicken pieces. We purchased two 2-piece meals. We asked for mild but it was actually spicier than we had anticipated. Way spicier than the mild chicken burger we ordered but still manageable and tasty. The coating was very dense and thick but the actual texture was light, breaking away quite easily. I was surprised at how it wasn’t overly oily (for fried chicken).

All-in-all, this is a great option for the many Muslims living in the area and a must try if you’re passing by for a quick and satisfying bite.

Meat Source: Currently chicken is only being served, which all comes from Hand Slaughtered Sources, Madina Wholesale Poultry. ** NOTE: meat was checked (verbal assurance) at time of review and can change at anytime – please check meat sources before eating and let us know if there are any discrepancies **

  • How does it fare compared to popeyes chicken?

  • Wonderful news! I need to try it out, I’m getting sick of Popeyes and Quik Chick!

  • That pizza looks delicious! Can’t wait to try it.

  • I stopped by yesterday and we tried their chicken burger. It tastes like a McChicken burger (halal in Medinah)! All in all food was great, next we’ll try their pizzas

  • Unfortunately I did not have a good experience this evening. Service was lousy, they did not even have bottled water (or willing to give you in a cup), had only fountain drinks. Very unorganized, could not take a simply order and quite frankly the food was subpar. Not sure what the hype is about, but Popeye’s and others are much better! definitely not going back!!!

    • The food were good but the water issue, I do agree, correct but you have to ask again and again. Anyway service should and must improve to flourish business, as a beginner we can tolerate them for sometime. I saw the boss sitting on a table watching the happenings. We hope things will improve gradually.

  • I just returned from having dinner at chunky chicken. I had suggested it to the kids several times but they never wanted to try it. Today they finally agreed. I must say that I have never seen a whole chicken that small! I ordered the whole chicken platter for 24.99. I literally got 4 pieces of chicken…and I’m not talking about large quarter chicken sizes! There were no wings. My family often goes to nando’s…I guess I was expecting the same serving sizes, but was I ever wrong! And what I thought would be a proper salad was some sliced onion, tomato, cucumber and lettuce at the side of the plate with no dressing. On top of that, the chicken was dry!😳 Needless to say the kids were upset and I would never recommend this place or go back. I must add that someone reading this review might think I am a very picky person but that is far from true. Infact I am very easy to please when it comes to food. I have never written a review on any restaurant I have ever eaten in, but felt the need to share this experience. Their other items may be good, but I will never know because I will not be returning.
