Halal Pumpernickel’s at Harbourfront Toronto
** This location is now closed**
We were all cold, tired and very hungry after a full day of being outside walking the streets of downtown Toronto. After remembering that there was a halal Pumpernickel’s location somewhere, our group got a sudden surge of energy and started frantically tapping our smart phones with frost-bitten fingers trying to get an exact location. There were a few of them that came up in search, but we quickly deciphered that the one in Harbourfront Centre’s food court (top-level) was the one!
A few weeks back I made a call to the owner to verify their meat source (Iqbal Halal Meats). So after figuring out where we were going we quickly made our way because we knew they were cleared of their background check.
We arrived at what we thought was the building. We ran inside (when I say we, there was about 9 of us).
Not realizing how loud and energized we were asked a front desk security guard, in a very animated and frantic tone, “Where’s Pumpernickel’s?!” From his perspective we were insane. But he laughed and explained we were in the wrong building. His face turned from shock to curiosity and proceeded to ask, “so what’s the deal with Pumpernickel’s? No one has ever ran in here looking for them, I mean they’re a good lunch spot, but last I checked they were just a Pumpernickel’s”.
His sentiment rang true. For the ordinary person, Pumpernickel’s is just Pumpernickel’s. But to a Muslim, a halal Pumpernickel’s is like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, and that’s how we were treating it that day. Like every halal deli deprived Muslim, we have all made that desperate dash to that “new” place we’ve been hearing about.
Yes, it’s just a deli, but for me and I’m sure I’m not the only one — it’s another option.
The halal Pumpernickel’s menu is very diverse and kind of chaotic, but that’s ok. You could get a burger, or a shawarma, or breakfast if you’re there early enough. But We were there for something different.
Like Roast Beef Dinner:
Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich:
Turkey Deli Sandwich:
And ok – one of the usual, Classic Hamburger with Fries:
Aside from great, fresh food, the service is EXCEPTIONAL. The owner and all staff are very kind and very caring. They all went out of their way to help us and talked to us as if we knew them for years. I will definitely be back!
