We were invited to get an early peek for a new menu at Black Ox Bistro for 2016. To help us enjoy the experience, we decided to bring along a couple of our Facebook fans through a fun contest. Winners Nameera and Nabeela helped us devour a few of their newest additions.

If you haven’t heard of Black Ox Bistro, they are regarded as Toronto’s First Upscale Steakhouse. Still fairly new to the halal dining scene, they’ve created a good reputation despite a bumpy start. They have rebounded, winning the hearts of many who’ve been searching for a more refined place to dine.

What’s even more impressive is that they are now fully HMA certified and monitored meaning you can dine with complete confidence that everything from the meat, cheeses and even sauces are completely halal. Yes, even the “bacon” is halal — it’s beef bacon!

Their menu has always been very plentiful and diverse with entrees ranging from steaks and pastas to sandwiches plus unique dishes like Beef Wellington. Their new menu still has most of their previous items, but offers even more variety that isn’t readily available as a halal option anywhere else. Here are just a few of the items we had a chance to try:

This seemed a bit strange to me to have creamy base pasta with tangy Asian flavours, but I was really surprised at how well the flavours played together. The acidity of the General Tao chicken cut through the cream sauce nicely without overpowering. The dish left us wanting more!

I’m glad they were able to bring in another vegetarian option. Presentation was impressive with a personal size pizza sitting in a skillet. The toppings were plentiful and fresh. Sauce was a good balance of tart and fragrant but I was hoping for a more substantial crust, which would help hold the entire thing together.

This was my first time trying chicken and waffles but our guests Nameera and Nabeela are seasoned foodies and have made this dish at home so we relied on their input. We all loved this item and thought it was one of the best new additions. Nameera and Nabeela did express they would have liked some maple syrup on the side to go along with the creative maple butter the dish was served with, but overall, they would recommend this dish the most.

A Juicy Lucy is a cheese stuffed burger patty — but Black Ox Bistro doesn’t just use any cheese, it’s chili-infused mozzarella. Then they add in a layer of bacon and potato croquette, plus tomato and arugula all sandwiched between a toasted brioche bun. We enjoyed the burger and even though Nameera said she’s not a fan of potato she did enjoy it in the burger.

Handmade tortilla shells, fresh guacamole, pickled red cabbage and onions, fresh cilantro and lime. You then choose your preferred protein: fried tilapia, slow-braised lamb shoulder or chipotle chicken (we got one of each). I personally loved the slow-braised lamb but fried tilapia was a close second. They had a great and unexpected kick of spice, which was totally satisfying and very authentic. Only issue was things got a bit sloppy as the sauce seeped through the tortilla, making them a bit delicate. 

Overall, these are great additions to the menu. Hope you get to check them out soon. It would be a great place during the holidays to make dinner plans with friends or family for a night out to celebrate something special.

Also, we were impressed to hear that Black Ox Bistro’s catering has also taken off this fall. Many businesses and individuals are having their holiday parties and family get-togethers catered by Black Ox. Something people may want to consider when they’re hosting their next party.

  • Best Halal Steakhouse in Toronto. Period. End of Discussion. 🙂

    I went early and I have been returning often. The food is awesome, the ambiance feels like I am sitting in a Milestone’s and the service is five star all around. Nothing even comes close in the halal community.

  • I took my daughters here this week and was really looking forward to the King ribs. Our waiter was amazing. Just the right knowledge and suggestions. My daughter ordered their specialty – King Ribs. I was really impressed with the softness and taste of this cut of meat. They truly have the best out there. The King ribs was great as usual.

  • Steak has never tasted this good for me! Our server was engaging, attentive and fun! Service is at a whole new level for these guys. The steaks melt in your mouth. The sweet potato fries are special enough to write home about. Vegetables and garlic mash cooked to perfection. To top it off, the famous beef brisket poutine is the best even if you are not sure you like beef! We went back a month later and were equally impressed. Place was busy on the weekend, we didn’t have reservations but walk-in was fine.

  • I had an awesome work lunch at Black Ox last week. The waiter was super friendly and helpful in giving menu recommendations. Everything we are was delicious. I already want to go back and have the grilled chicken breast because I saw two people order it and it looked spectacular. The dining room seemed pretty fancy. We just sat our table and the ambiance was still great.

  • We have eaten here several times for special occasions. Had reservations at 9 pm on a busy Saturday night. Seated within 5 minutes. Server was very friendly and helpful. And now to the food. One of the best meals I have had all year. Would I recommend it? You bet! Worth every penny. 2016 Menu in Black ox?! Here we come!!!

  • Their service is super fast now. I had been there when they first opened and the service was slower but these guys have really picked up service speed now.

  • Celebrating my birthday and this restaurant was highly recommended by many people. When we arrived 10 minutes late for our reservation due to the traffic, we were expecting a long wait since there was many people waiting. They seated us in only 10 minutes and then moved us twice to give us better table/location each time. They really went out of their way to make our visit and occasion a special one. This type of caring just isn’t common anymore. The service and presentation was first class and food was delicious. We had the surf and turf and I must I have never seen better presentation. We finished off with their famous crème brulle.

  • We had an excellent anniversary dinner here this past weekend. The waiter was extremely accommodating–informative but gave us room to consider the menu, made some great suggestions. My husband had a new york striploin, which was amazing–our waiter gave a recommendation on how to have it cooked and was spot on. To be honest I normally used to have well done but he politely asked me to try the medium and I must say that I am converted for life. My 8 oz filet mignon was perfect, as was the sauteed mushroom with fresh herb butter and hand cut fries. We had the black ox brisket poutine as an appetizer, which were quite delicious. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a special night out at an amazing steakhouse.

  • Made reservations when visiting this joint. It was great. Walking distance from my home. I love the location. It can be romantic and for business all in one. I enjoyed my meal — I got the Filet Mignon cooked medium and side of aged basmati rice. Make a reservation and enjoy fine dining at its best.

  • The atmosphere was great, good service as well. We went for lunch got seats no waiting. the waiter was excellent, he gave us space to talk and eat and did not bother us throughout the meal. That’s a plus for me. The food came on time and in order, there was time space between appetizer and entree. I recommend this place for the steaks. Best in town!

    We ambled into the restaurant with no reservation around 8:30 pm, but was seated quickly and orders taken. I am a huge fan of the bone-in ribeye here at Black Ox, and so I got my favorite! We started with bacon-wrapped scallops and it was lovely, very flavourful. We ordered hand cut fries, a baked potato and lobster tail as sides and they were all very tasty. The waitstaff really worked hard to please us, and for a late dinner, I think it would have been hard to beat.

    Wow I cannot say enough good things about the dinner we had at Black Ox Bistro. We dined on the churrasqueira wings (to die for), filet mignon and grilled garlic butter jumbo shrimp. The meal was a 20/10. The filet mignon literally melted in your mouth and it is served with a creamy cafe de paris butter. I am literally drooling as I write this review. SOOOO good. Definite return trip.

  • On Dec 20th me and my wife decided to celebrate her birthday at this restaurant. we made reservation around 5pm and once we arrived we were welcomed by the manager, he was very helpful at the beginning

    I ordered Juicy Lucy burger (17$)
    my wife ordered GRILLED CHICKEN FETTUCCINE and chose steak instead of chicken (27$ dish)

    Kids ordered kids menu burger and chicken nuggets

    My burger had a huge slap of fried mash potatoes, it was messy and falling apart, I couldn’t even hold it without being completely melting down on the plate, so it was a mess…The mash potatoes didn’t go well with that burger, I had 10 times better burger which costed me 5$, it was tasteless and a mess, I guess only looked good in the picture (don’t ever order that burger). My kid burger tasted better…

    My wife dish also was tasteless, the steak was good but for sure it wasn’t worth the 27$, we had better Italian dishes

    As mentioned above service started amazing but after they got busy with more customers we were completely left alone, my wife mentioned at the beginning that we wanted to order dessert but the manager seems ignored us (they were not short on staff but their staff seems running around doing nothing, they act like they all managers…) we waited over 20 minutes and then with no help so my wife and kids left, I waited another 10 minutes by my self just to get the bill, I asked some one (not our server) to get me the bill and finally got it

    we felt like they didn’t want us there, it was weird

    anyway first time and last time for us, we drove from Mississauga for tasteless expensive food with good service at beginning and very bad service at the end

    maybe they have better other dishes that we didn’t try, but avoid the ones we mentioned above

  • Evening was made perfect. Black Ox didn’t disappoint. Excellent service and excellent food. We had a corner table for nine and never felt rushed or crowded. The Rib Eye was excellent. Definitely grab appetizers,they are wonderfully HUGE! We had a blast.

    This is definitely up there with the best steak I’ve ever eaten. The waiters have immense knowledge are well trained and super friendly. This is the best place to go as far as I’m concerned, it gets pretty busy in there as you’d expect for such a fab steak so you need to book! Don’t miss out it’s a must!!!

    • You know I’ve trying to call them since Monday….at least 10 times. No one ever picks up….how did u guys make reservations?
      We’re a party of about 30….so disappointing!

    I was dieting but figured I should actually order what the restaurant was known for, so I ordered a steak. It was seasoned to perfection, cooked just the right temperature. The beef lasagna was amazing. To top it all off, I accidentally left my wallet on the table. I returned several hours later to find it unharmed, sealed in a bag and locked up with security. I am very appreciative of the helpful staff who assisted me in reclaiming it.

    We visited Black Ox for a late dinner seating, following an awesome day in the city. We were seated immediately, and drinks were served nearly immediately. We were shown the Black Ox’s meat offerings, and soon after we were dining on our steaks. My wife ordered the Rib Eye and I had the filet mignon. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. Flavorful, tender, juicy, and delicious. We had lobster tail with lemon herb butter as our side. The food was delicious. The portions are gargantuan and are best shared.

  • We very carefully chose this restaurant after a lot of thought on picking and choosing an amazing restaurant when me and my girlfriend visited the place and BAM, we chose the best! =)

    The food here is spectacular. From the way it is cooked to the flavours, wow!

    I must also include the decor and vibe has a very romantic feel to it. The service is also excellent – you will not be disappointed!

  • We thoroughly enjoy their food, however the service is a little bit lacking. As mentioned above, very attentive when you first arrive then you have trouble getting service as the time goes on. Our salad and main course were brought together. Salad should arrive before the main course and the meal brought after we have finished our salad. We have no problem waiting a little bit between courses as you do not want to feel that you are being rushed to get out.

    Black Ox Bistro is listed on the Halal Foodie site however the waiter did not know if they take the Halal Foodie card or not. He didn’t even check and they did not take it.

    Taking the Halal Foodie card need to be established, otherwise what is the sense of having a Halal Foodie card if the listed establishments do not take it?

    It is closed down as of today due to termination of lease. The note says almost $30,000 of unpaid rent. 🙄
