Tasty Shawarma in Markham
What is your go-to shawarma place in Markham? Quick! If you are drawing a blank, that is because shawarma places are almost non-existent in Markham. Being huge fans of Middle Eastern food, we were excited when we learned about Tasty Shawarma opening up at 7677 Markham Road (intersection of Markham Road and 14th Avenue). Despite our excitement, we were a bit ambivalent about the food, as we have had our share of below average shawarma plates and sandwiches over the years.
Opened and operated by Muslims, the Markham location is actually a branch of the original Scarborough Tasty Shawarma and Falafel. We were pleasantly surprised that the restaurant was clean, spacious, had ample seating and modern décor. This was a little mind boggling because we are used to run down, take-out shawarma places. The menu was similar to other shawarma joints with offerings such as beef and chicken shawarma sandwiches and plates, burgers and falafels. Of notice were the Beef Striploin Steak Plate and Chicken Breast Steak Plate, which were unique.
We ordered a Chicken Shawarma Plate ($7.49), a Chicken Shawarma Sandwich ($4.99) and a Falafel Sandwich ($4.49). Please note that they accept only cash and debit for payment. The order was ready within minutes, which was perfect because we were starving.
The Chicken Shawarma Plate was presented nicely on a platter (not a Styrofoam container) and looked appetizing with generous portions of rice, chicken, salad and lots of humus, garlic sauce and hot sauce. In our first bite we tried to get a little bit of everything on the fork and were shocked at how delicious the food was! Yes, shocked. The chicken was juicy and tender but also a little crispy, just the way we like it. Even the non-traditional salad was kicked up a notch as it had hints of spice in it. The rice was seasoned and went well with the chicken. We appreciated the generous use of sauce to top the plate as it brought everything together.
The sandwiches looked small when wrapped but were huge when we unwrapped them. They were not wrapped in the traditional vertical direction, but rather like a (huge) taco. The Chicken Shawarma Sandwich was just as good as the Shawarma Plate, packed with flavor and fresh salad. The falafel in the Falafel Sandwich was moist and made an excellent vegetarian option. Everyone who accompanied us thoroughly enjoyed the food and stated that they would definitely visit again.
Our visit to Tasty Shawarma was full of pleasant surprises. From the well-maintained restaurant to the absolutely delicious food, Tasty Shawarma is great addition to the Markham halal restaurant community.
