Top Gun Burgers and Top Gun Steak — Two More Halal Joints in Kensignton

Toronto-folks, Top Gun Burger and Top Gun Steak are right in Kensington Market – down the street from one another. Those who live outside of Toronto, I honestly think that food is worth traveling for – and Kensington Market is so eclectic and full of culture, definitely make the day of it.

I’m always in the mood for a good burger. When Top Gun Burger opened up a short while ago, I was more than excited. If you’ve been reading Halal Foodie for a while, you probably know I love all food but cupcakes take the cake. Well, burgers are a very close second.

Anyway, to the food! First, unlike many Toronto hot spots, there is so much seating at Top Gun Burgers. I think I counted over 50 seats – almost unheard of in Toronto. If you’re going with a large group of friends or family, there’s long tables; if you’re just grabbing lunch on your break, there’s also some stools near the window where you can people watch and enjoy your meal. And it’s stroller friendly – which is a big plus to me – nothing irritates me more when I have to maneuver my stroller through throngs of people and chairs. And I’m sure nothing irritates non-stroller folks more than annoying strollers running over your feet!

We went with the Freedom Fighter ($8.99) and Firefly ($9.50). The burgers were awesome. The meat was cooked and seasoned perfectly, I was very impressed.

Top Gun

The Freedom Fighter is a beef burger topped with jalapeno and cream cheese poppers, and the usual condiments. It was a little difficult to eat but worth the mess.

The Firefly is a beef cheeseburger topped with – are you ready for this? Chili, cheddar cheese and onion rings. Again, a little messy to eat but the mix of flavours was spot on.

In terms of spacing, I would say that Top Gun Steak has half the seating space as Top Gun Burgers, but it does also have a nice patio space which is great for the summer/early fall. I found it a little difficult to maneuver with a stroller but expect this in downtown Toronto.

We then went over to Top Gun Steak (hey, when in Kensington Market, right?) where we ordered The Cheerful ($8.50) and Take My Breath Away ($10.50) both recommended by the staff.

Top Gun

The Cheerful is a steak sandwich topped with special Top Gun sauce, cheddar cheese, brie cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions.

Top Gun

Take My Breath Away is a steak sandwich with deep-fried crusted mozzarella cheese, pico de gallo, avocado and chipotle mayo. For those who haven’t been yet, you’ve been warned: these sandwiches are filling. After the awesome burgers, we could barely finish our sandwiches so we ate the rest for dinner and they still tasted good.

Oh, and one last thing. Both Top Gun Burgers and Top Gun Steak have an impressive variety of soft drinks. I’m tired of restaurants only having a few drinks on hand – and hope more follow this lead of offering everything under the rainbow!

The verdict? Awesome burgers and great steak sandwiches, and great customer service. The staff were so friendly at both locations. Look forward to going back!

Meat Source (both locations): All Chicken is direct from Sargent Farms (hand slaughtered halal and HMA Certified). All beef is direct from St. Helen’s Meat Packers. ** NOTE: meat was checked (verbal assurance) at time of review and can change at anytime – please check meat sources before eating and let us know if there are any discrepancies **

  • When did Top Gun Burger open? I tried out the food in the Kensington Market area about two months ago (went to the Burgenator and Top Gun Steak), didn’t see Top Gun Burger at around that time. Also, are the burgers at Top Gun Burger better than those at the Burgenator?

  • How different is burgernator to top gun burger? Isn’t it owned by the same owners?

  • Always a big fan of a good burger when downtown. This place scores big on taste and value in my books. It’s in the same area as burgernator but has a different flair and atmosphere. Can’t go wrong with either choice.
