Halal Gelatin

Halal GelatinNo, I’m not 5 years old, but I do love me some halal gelatin dessert (a.k.a. Jello which is the brand that is not halal). Alone or as a layer or an ingredient in a dessert, it’s that sweet firm, jelly delight that I can’t resist, and I’m happy to report that my hunt for the best halal brand is over!

The trouble with many halal gelatin knock-offs is that they’re usually a far cry from the real thing. A visit to my local halal grocery store uncovers a nice variety of different brands. Mango, orange, pineapple… but strawberry is typically my favourite flavour. I scoop up 3 different brands to try out.

I’m looking for a few things in halal gelatin; fresh smell, wait time, fridge life and consistency. Fresh smell might sound like weird criteria, but some brands have a strange manufactured smell that’s almost plastic. That can’t be good. I want to smell a blast of the flavour that’s on the package, not something stale. For wait time, I want something that doesn’t set quick at room temperature because these ones aren’t firm and get runny when you refrigerate. Fridge life ideally should be 4-5 days and last but not least, consistency… I want to be able to poke it and see it jiggle 🙂

The winner? Domo brand Geline Halal Gelatin Dessert. Easy to use, firm, great alone or as a layer in trifle… this one really stood out from the competition 😉
