Tandoori Croutons

Salads are an easy make-from-scratch lunch or dinner that’s healthy and nutritious because you know exactly what’s gone into it. But like many meals, a salad can easily become monotonous and boring.  A great way to add variety is to make your own croutons. They’re easier to make than you think and home-made croutons are a great way to use up extra bread while taking only minutes to make.

Here’s a quick and easy South Asian inspired recipe for Spicy Tandoori Croutons:

Yield 12 servings/4 cups


  • 15 slices white bread
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1-2 teaspoon tandoori powder – more or less to taste
  • 1-2 to 3/4 teaspoon red chilli powder – more or less to taste (optional)
  • 1-2 teaspoons garlic salt – more or less to taste


Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Remove crusts from bread slices. Add tandoori powder and chilli powder to melted butter. Mix well and let stand for 5 minutes so spices are properly blended. Taste and adjust spices if necessary. Mix again and brush the bread on both sides with melted butter mixture. Cut bread slices up into small cubes that are about 1/2-3/4″. Sprinkle with garlic salt. Arrange cubes on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 300 degrees F for 15 minutes or until browned. Let cool. Store croutons in a covered, air-tight container or plastic bag.

Add your croutons to this salad:

  • Baby greens
  • Mango chunks and/or pomegranates
  • Crushed Cashews
  • Grilled chicken/tofu
